Sleep is as essential to human beings as food, air, and water. However, everyone experiences difficulty in sleeping at some point in their life. If you have trouble sleeping, one of the best sleep aids is a lifestyle change which can help you regain a satisfactory sleep pattern. Experiment with the helpful strategies offered here.

Exercise and Sleep: Getting a reasonable level of exercise each day is a crucial component of achieving a good sleep. Older people tend to do less exercise during the day and consequently need less sleep during the night. Insomniacs have a similar pattern. Read more…

Don’t nap. Try not to take any naps the day after you’ve lost sleep. If you feel sleepy, get up and do something active. Walk, make the bed, or do your errands. While studying, get up regularly to walk around your room. This will increase the flow of oxygen to your brain and help you to be more alert.

Eat a Small Meal. This is very effective and also easy. A big meal before sleeping can keep your digestion working for hours however, a small meal puts only a small demand on your body and allows it to rest much more fully.

Sleeping Pills and Alcohol: Sleeping pills, is the popular name for medication which helps you to fall asleep or stay asleep. They may have their short terms benefits in some cases but they are not a cure for insomnia. Rather they merely mask the symptoms Read more…

Avoid Alcohol. Whilst a great way to fall asleep drinks such as wine, beer and spirits will ruin a good night’s sleep through dehydration. You will typically wake up in the middle of the night with a powerful, uncomfortable thirst, and and often with a high temperature.

Avoid Computer and TV Screens. Watching TV or using a computer stimulates or excites your brain. This means your mind will probably be racing when you get in to bed. Have an hour of winding down and relaxing just before you try and sleep.

Room temperature. Sleep in a cool room (Around 60 degrees is good). Pile on another blanket or add one under the mattress pad rather than turn up the heat. A physician I know used this principle while in medical school; he kept an air conditioner on in his room all year. He said it helped him sleep better so that he needed less sleep. You don’t need to go to such extremes, but do keep it cool.
