Lack of Sleep

Lack of Sleep is linked to heart disease.

Lack of Sleep?

The one thing most humans do not have is a lack of sleep. On average we spend something like 29 years of our lives asleep. Some have tried to use this time for ‘more useful’ things, but it is not possible to go cold turkey and do without sleeping.  Most of us tried to stay awake as youngsters and can still remember the horrible, growing sleepiness after one or two nights, and the relief to finally get to bed and go to sleep. The record is over 260 hours without sleep though most people cannot manage a fraction of that time. But what if sleep were gradually eliminated, slowly squeezed from eight to four or even two hours? Many people have attempted this, but (as far as we know) no one has managed less than four hours on a regular basis because they find the side effects of a lack of sleep intolerable.

Leonardo da Vinci tried a different approach. Rather than cutting down his main sleep period, he slept for twenty minutes every two hours, which adds up to about four hours of every day. You will note that he didn’t break the four hour barrier and maybe his ‘wakefulness’ has become exaggerated over time.  Even people who sleep too much are proof that sleep is unavoidable. Many of them insist they do not have a sleep problem because they can fall asleep anytime. Actually, they don’t suffer from a lack of sleep they suffer from poor quality sleep. They just have to sleep longer and longer to compensate. They can’t just eliminate the poor quality sleep.

Lack of Sleep Needs Treatment

But what of the people with insomnia? Surely these are people (and perhaps you’re one) who are forced to get by with a lack of sleep? To understand this and to begin to grasp the essence of Insomnia Treatment we first need to understand the complexity and richness of sleep.
